The phrase, doctrines of a church, can be open to two or more interpretations. It may mean what a church body teaches, or what a church body believes the Bible to teach. I believe the second explainaion is really where the doctrines of a church should always derive from.
One of the marks of the historic church from the first century up to recently has been that we believed in the plainess of the scriptures and the unmistakable clarity we can receive by just taking the scriptures at face value. In others words "the Bible says what it says". To give an example if we read "thou shalt not" then we most certainly understand this is something we are commanded not to do. It is not a suggestion, it is a commandment and we certainly should not doubt what it means. Only a foolish person would ask if God really mean't what He said. Even more importantly we receive our salvation by faith and we don't even receive faith until we hear the word of God. Doesn't faith come by hearing and hearing by the word of God? Romans 10:17
All who believe the Scriptures are divinely inspired should most certainly consider them the well spring of spiritual truth. There is no reason not to believe that the Bible contains the revelation of God to mankind. And if the well spring then it is the supreme standard for our faith and practice. So then whatever agrees with this standard is right and whatever disagrees is wrong. Black and white and no room for grey areas. It is therefore our duty to search the scriptures on whatever subject concerns the situation and abide by whatever guide we find in the scriptures. This duty cannot and most certainly will not be accomplished unless we set aside any preconceived notions we may have on whatever that particular subject may be.
Unfortunatly however, because of man's opinions we have a wide variety of doctrines that do not agree with the whole word of God. That's why preconceived notions must be set aside. Without doing this first we wind up with man's traditions being taught as opposed to God's precepts.
