I Can, I Will, I Do Believe

A long time ago, Burl Ives recorded a song entitled "I Can, I Will, I Do Believe" on an album by the same title. I have tried, rather unsuccessfully, to find out more about that song, where it came from, when it was initially written, etc. If anyone at all can help me out here, please do! I’d love to hear from you! But I will say that it made a tremendous impact on my life.

Let’s just look at that title for a minute and see the tremendous progression of faith:

I Can

I Will

I DO Believe

"I Can". Remember when in school your teachers taught you the difference between "May I?" and "Can I?" "May I?" meant that you were asking permission to do something. "Can I?" meant that you had the power to do it, that you were able to do it. I have had my questions and doubts, there’s no doubt about that! Once one becomes a Christian, the devil doubletimes his efforts to defeat and discourage. He knows that he can’t have the soul who believes in Christ, but he surely can make one miserable with discouragement, questions, and doubts. I certainly have had mine. However, I keep coming back to the fact that God enables me to have faith in Him. He gave His Son Jesus to die for me, yes me! (You, too!) Faith itself is a gift of God! He gives us the ability to trust in Him. So I CAN believe.

The next step is "I Will". OK, I can believe, but WILL I? Absolutely! I may still struggle, but because I’m a child of the King of Kings, I WANT to be in deep personal relationship with my Heavenly Father. I choose to hang onto the fact of God’s incomparable and unconditional love.

I DO. Yep, no matter what the devil throws at me, I am determined to hang onto my Lord! When I was in college and involved in Campus Crusade for Christ, I, of course, became acquainted with their witnessing pamphlet, "The Four Spiritual Laws". There was an illustration of a train. The engine was labeled "Fact", referring to the truth that God loves and wants to save us. The middle car was "Faith". We must latch our faith onto the facts of God’s saving power. Then the caboose was "Feeling". Now, I don’t know about you, but one of the greatest weapons the devil uses with me is that I can sometimes not feel very close to God. But where in the train does "Feeling" come? The CABOOSE!" The facts are immovable! We can latch our faith onto those facts, not worrying about the fact that we might not feel very close to God. Once we renew out will to believe, those feelings will return.

Here are the words to this fantastic song:

I Can, I Will, I Do Believe

I can, I will, I do believe

I can I will, I do believe

That Jesus saves me now.

I’m kneeling at the mercy seat

I’m kneeling at the mercy seat

I’m kneeling at the mercy seat

Where Jesus answers prayer.

Refining fire flow through my heart

Refining fire flow through my heart

Refining fire flow through my heart

Illuminate my soul.

Oh that it now from Heaven might fall,

O that it now from Heaven might fall,

O that it now from Heaven might fall

And all my sins consume.

I can, I will, and I do believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and my Lord and Savior.
